A patient with severe arthritis is reporting worsening hip pain and would like to know if any of his medications can be taken more regularly to manage the excruciating pain. Review the information below and state if any of the medications can be modified or if supplementary medications need to be considered.
Patient Usage
Paracetamol (500mg capsules) - Two capsules, five times daily
Ibuprofen (200mg tablets) - Two tablets, three times daily
Tramadol (50mg tablets) - Two tablets, twice daily
Maximum Daily Usage
Paracetamol - 4g
Ibuprofen - 2.4g
Tramadol - 400mg
Patient Usage
Paracetamol - 500 x 2 x 5 = 5g (Overdose - dose reduction required)
Ibuprofen - 200 x 2 x 3 = 1.2g (Scope to increase medication usage)
Tramadol - 50 x 2 x 4 = 400mg (Maximum daily dosage reached)
