Motivation & Insight Into Dentistry 13
Describe to me how you would tell a patient that their tooth needs to be extracted.
Excellent Candidate Approach
I believe that this scenario requires a great deal of empathy and good listening skills. Firstly, I would explain the current state of the tooth, and the options available for the patient. For example, during my observation experience in my local dental surgery, I saw how the dentist laid out the choices of an extraction or a root canal to a patient. I would be sure to explain my reasoning thoroughly, and check that the patient understands. Ultimately, it is the patient’s choice if they wish to proceed with the extraction, but I would be sensitive and careful to emphasise what is best for their wellbeing. I would also take time to listen to the patient’s concerns and worries, and leave enough time for questions. I would also suggest that the patient go home and think about it, unless emergency measures or immediate pain relief is needed.
