Motivation & Insight Into Dentistry 15
What would you do if a parent refused antibiotics for their child for religious or moral reasons?
Excellent Candidate Approach
In this situation, there is a conflict between a dentist’s duty to put the patient’s wellbeing first, and duty to obtain consent for any medical or dental procedure. I would first find out why the parent objects to antibiotics, and try to persuade them of the need and benefits of antibiotics. Oftentimes, patiently explaining how antibiotics work can form trust. If the parent still refuses, I would need to respect their wishes, but I would emphasize the risks that could happen if the child does not take antibiotics, and ensure that they understand.
