Should patients be discouraged from taking antibiotics to reduce resistance?
Excellent Candidate Approach
The issue of antibiotic resistance is increasingly important as strains of resistant microbes grow. I believe the answer varies from case to case, and must be based on scientific evidence. If there is a clinical need for antibiotics, then the appropriate dose and type must be prescribed. However, if there is not, for example, for disease that are not bacterial in origin, then antibiotics should be discouraged. In both cases, good communication with patients are a must. Dentists should explain the risks of antibiotic resistance, and the evidence or justification for antibiotics and their appropriate dosage.
