Motivation & Insight Into Dentistry 18
A patient attends your surgery stating that they have toothache, however they state that they cannot afford the required treatment proposed. How would you approach this situation?
Excellent Candidate Approach
The main issues that comes to mind is professionalism and putting patients’ wellbeing as a first priority. As a healthcare professional, it is my responsibility to care for this patient. However, I also need to consider financial implications. One way to approach this situation is to offer perhaps cheaper treatment options for the patient to choose from, or raise the issue with the practice owner and discuss a payment schedule that suits the patient’s current financial situation. As a last resort, I could provide immediate pain relief, and refer the patient to an NHS hospital or other affordable treatment centre.
