Motivation & Insight Into Dentistry 20
A seven year old girl attends your surgery with her parents and on examination you note extensive decay in many of her teeth and your clinical opinion is that they need to be extracted. You explain this to the girl's parents who disagree with your recommendation. Explain what actions you would take in this scenario
Excellent Candidate Approach
As a healthcare professional, it is my responsibility to ensure that the patient’s wellbeing is protected. However, I must also obtain consent before any procedure. In this case, the parents disagree with my opinion and therefore do not give consent. I would take time to explain the evidence and justification for my opinion, and emphasize the benefit that extraction would provide for the patient. I would also be empathetic and listen to their perspective, as they may have personal reasons for disagreeing. If this still cannot be resolved, I can provide a referral to a colleague. I could also explain to the parents that it is against my ethical principles to withhold treatment from this young patient, and therefore it may be advisable if they consult another dentist for treatment.
