Role Play Scenario 1
A 26 year old patient, Steve, is upset about his teeth. He describes them as ‘ugly’ and ‘odd looking.’ He says that his teeth are adding to his anxiety and depression. You find no evidence that he requires braces, and he is ineligible for NHS treatment.
Speak to Steve about next steps to take.
Excellent Student Approach
2. Open Questions
3. Develop Rapport
4. Address the issues known
5. Identify any additional issues
6. Summary and plan going forward
1 - Introduce yourself to Steve politely and enquire as to how he is.
2 - Start with an open question or statement. For example, explain to Steve that you are aware he has some issues surrounding his teeth - can he tell you about this?
3 - Be empathetic with your responses. You need to show an understanding of Steve’s feelings in this role play.
4 - Explain that from a clinical point of view - from your point of view as a dentist - his teeth are good. He has no clinical need for braces. Unfortunately, as such he is ineligible for NHS treatment, meaning that he would be required to use private healthcare, which could be expensive. If he asks you more about this explain that any dentist will give him the same verdict, and that unfortunately there are guidelines in place for this.
5 - Speak to him gently about how his teeth are linked to his anxiety or depression. Explain that he could speak to his GP again about these issues, as they will be best placed to help him.
6 - Develop a plan together. This could involve: firstly, visiting his GP to talk about his anxiety and depression. Additionally, he may wish to look into private treatment, and begin to calculate if he has the funds to afford it - if so schedule another appointment to discuss this with him.
