Role Play Scenario 15
A rumour is going around your medical school that one of your fellow students Chris - who you know relatively well - is selling illegal drugs to fund their studies.
In this role play, you may speak to Chris.
Excellent Student Approach
1. Introduction
2. Open Questions
3. Develop Rapport
4. Address the issues known
5. Identify any additional issues
6. Summary and plan going forward
1 - Let the student know that you wish to speak to them in private at a suitable time. Ask them how they are in general.
2 - Explain that you have heard some rumours that you need to discuss with them. Because you have signposted clearly, they may decide to explain something at this early point. If not, ask a simple open question, such as, ‘I hope you are well, I was just hoping to discuss a couple of concerns with you that have been raised by other students, would that be alright?’
3 - Ensure you appear empathetic and friendly throughout, rather than judgemental.
4 - Let them explain the situation to you. Given you know them quite well, they will likely be truthful. Let your responses be guided by their reaction - remember that at this stage you have only heard rumours. You must be clear that the behaviour you have heard discussed is completely unacceptable. Therefor, whilst you are aware that it is just rumours, if such rumours continue then you may have to discuss this with the university. A healthcare degree is a professional qualification, and therefore students must uphold professional standards throughout their studies.
5 - Check again how they are in general, and remind them that you are there to talk to if needed, and of the support services available through the university.
6 - To move forward, check that your fellow student is clear that if you hear any more rumours like this you will report them to the university to investigate further; it is not your place to do detective work. Additionally, check that they have a support network in place, and people to talk to if they are struggling. Consider arranging a follow up meeting to ensure that the plans suggested are implemented appropriately.
