Role Play Scenario 41

You are captain of the school hockey team and are due to announce the squad for the regional championships tomorrow. Unfortunately, you have decided that one of your close friends Chris has not made the final squad. You have arranged to meet Chris prior to the announcement, to break the bad news.

Average Candidate Approach
  • Rushing straight into the matter, rather than starting with open questions and developing rapport (open questions and establishing rapport is vital even with close friends
  • A lack of empathy shown through verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Failing to address additional issues. It is important to ask Chris if he has any additional concerns, after which Chris will likely disclose that his father was due to return from early from an international business trip in order to support Chris and the team during the hockey tournament.

Excellent Candidate Approach - SPIKES
S – Setting up the interview (Preparing yourself and the consultation setting)
P – Perception (Understanding Chris’ perception of their hockey performance and the reason for the meeting)
I – Invitation (Wait for Chris to invite you to deliver the bad news)
K – Knowledge (Knowledge and information transfer to Chris)
E – Empathy and emotional support
S – Summary and strategy for the future
