How To Improve BMAT Section 3
Tips From BMAT Section 3 High Scoring Medical Students & Doctors
With only 30 minutes available to complete this section, the timings of the essay can be difficult. Therefore, effective time management is imperative. One way of doing this is spending 2 minutes choosing the question, 5 minutes planning, 20 minutes writing your answer, and 5 minutes reviewing your essay and checking for any errors (it is important to choose an essay question that you are confident in answering, as there is only a set amount of space given to answer thus you cannot restart).
Concise & Focused
Be concise when making your points; excess unnecessary information or ‘waffling’ can lower your score and give you less space to make more important points. Ensure that you implement this throughout your essay, in particular making the introduction and conclusion succinct. The introduction should briefly explain the quote given in the essay question - to highlight your understanding of it - and the conclusion should summarise your overall opinion on the statement given, based on the arguments that you have made.
Try to mention or incorporate the 4 pillars of medical ethics; beneficence (the well-being of the patient should be the doctor’s first priority), non-maleficence (do no harm), autonomy (the patient has the right to determine their own healthcare) and justice (the fair distribution of healthcare to all patients)
