COVID-19 Q15
How could you maintain mental health levels and the economy during a pandemic?
Excellent Candidate Approach
I believe that more efficient action at the outset of the pandemic would have been beneficial for mental health - a fast and stringent lockdown, with contact tracing brought in at the outset, would have allowed the disease to be controlled, meaning the country could have reopened more quickly. I would also consider whether different groups might face different restrictions - the vast majority of young people, for example, feel dismayed that vital formative years of their life have been taken away by a disease that will almost certainly not affect them. I would look to provide better care for those whose livelihoods are destroyed by the pandemic - through benefits, furlough, and help with rent and mortgage payments - as one finds that money issues contribute to mental health problems, and those with the least frequently suffer the greatest mental health burden.
