Canada Specific Healthcare Question 6
Who would you regard as the greatest Canadian contributor to modern healthcare, and why?
I would regard Sir Frederick Banting as the greatest Canadian contributor to modern healthcare, because of his role in the discovery of insulin. Mr Banting – during his study of the pancreas – was able to extract insulin from animals after researching numerous papers on the compound released from the Islets of Langerhans, that would later be named ‘insulin’. Insulin is one of the most important substances in the world arguably, as a result of its widespread role in the management of type 1 diabetes, but also due to its physiological functions in the body. Therefore, the discovery of it paved the way in the understanding of an array of metabolic disorders, as well as crucially changing the lives of diabetic patients.
