New Zealand Specific Healthcare Question 10
Universities are failing to graduate as Maori compared to Non-Maori students. Why do you think this inequity is occurring?
Excellent Answer
Maori are more likely to come from uneducated backgrounds, which means that finding the money needed to buy appropriate study-related tools could be challenging. Low-income students may also need to work to support themselves while they study. This may also contribute to less time available to complete adequate amounts of revision/assignments etc. outside of university hours. This is especially the case for the major cities such as Auckland where the cost of living is so much higher than the rest of the country.
Commitment to study at tertiary level is ongoing and requires a support network, especially for highly-competitive courses such as medicine. This may also be lacking if these students are coming from backgrounds, where there is little or no education past high school. These families may not understand the relationship between study outside of university and success in the classroom and therefore may expect their student to attend family/cultural events in the weekends or after hours.
