Motivation & Insight into Medicine 10
What do you think are the leading causes of mortality in Singapore?
While you do not need to list out all of the exact numbers, it is good to know some statistics to show that you are well prepared for all of these questions.
Average Candidate Response
I think that the leading causes of mortality are likely to be heart attacks, strokes and cancers.
Excellent Candidate Response
Given that Singapore is facing an aging population, the most common causes of death are often diseases of aging which include cancers (29%), pneumonias (20%), ischaemic heart diseases (18.5%) and cerebrovascular diseases ie stroke (6.3%).
After aging, the next largest problems are likely due to diseases of excess. As Singapore becomes more developed, Singaporeans tend to overeat and exert their bodies far less as they move from manual labour to more and more white-collar jobs. As such, diseases such as hypertension (4%) are an increasingly important contributor to mortality.
