Motivation & Insight into Medicine 11
If you were the Minister for Health, what two changes would you make to health-care in Singapore?
Average Candidate Response
I would increase investment in healthcare as well as focusing on preventative care and cancer research.
Excellent Candidate Response
Firstly, I would make coverage more comprehensive for preventative screenings. For example, I may extend MediSave such that it can be used for health screenings for diabetes or high blood cholesterol. In the long run, this would reduce medical expenditures and improve the quality of life of Singaporeans, as cancers or comorbidities are detected earlier and treated before the conditions worsen. Secondly, I would improve community outreach to the elderly through more volunteering projects and strengthening grassroots connections with the elderly. I may also provide more funding towards social care to help families take care of their elderly, as well as helping those who have been abandoned by their families or do not have anyone to take care of them. Lastly, I would run government campaigns to raise awareness about mental health, as the stresses of city life often take a toll on people and many Singaporeans even commit suicide despite it being a criminal offense.
