Motivation & Insight into Medicine 2
In recent years there has been a glut of doctors in Singapore. Why are you studying medicine?
Average Candidate Response
Having talked to my seniors at NUS, as well as the doctors and professors I have worked with at the HIV ward, I understand that the glut seems to be occurring between PGY training and specialization. Given our aging population, increased rates of infectious diseases and global warming, I think it is possible that the glut will relax in 7 year’s time [when I reach PGY2]. If there are gluts in certain specialties, I am very willing to enter specialties where demand for doctors outstrips the supply, such as geriatric or emergency medicine. I think it is important that we allocate doctors according to how many are needed in addition to which areas we are interested in.
Excellent Candidate Response
I believe that Medicine offers an unparalleled balance between being at the forefront of scientific innovation, as well as engaging and making a real difference to patients and families lives, to an extent that I believe no other profession can offer.
The additional opportunity to specialise in one of 20+ specialities, each with its own sub-specialities means that medicine is incredibly varied and offers such a wide range of opportunities for very fortunate medical students and doctors, which I very much hope to have the privilege of being.
Finally, whilst some students may be deterred by the 'hours' and 'workload', I think that this is one of the appeals of the profession, whereby the harder we work, and the more we input for our patients, the more positive the outcome, of course understanding that as a doctor and medical professional, we would have our limitations as well.
