Motivation & Insight into Medicine 6
Is it acceptable to infringe on one’s civil rights for the good of many (for example quarantining people suspected of having the disease during the SARs outbreak)?
Average Candidate Response
I think that this is absolutely right, as if inconveniencing one individual helps to save ten people, than this sacrifice should most definitely be made.
Excellent Candidate Response
It is important to recognize that there are a spectrum of cases you could consider where we “infringe on one’s civil rights for the good of many”. In your specific example, there is not only a utilitarian benefit to quarantining one person in an effort to prevent the outbreak of disease, but there is also a benefit to that individual as they receive the appropriate medical treatment and monitoring. Moreover, if the proper information is given to the person and medical staff are willing to sit down and explain the reasons behind quarantine, then I think most patients would be willing to comply, so their free will would not be imposed on either. As such, I think that the most appropriate response is to prioritise the majority, but still cater to, care for and provide for the individual.
