Motivation & Insight into Medicine 4
Why do some people describe the NHS as the ‘jewel in the welfare crown’?
Average Candidate Response
This is likely as the NHS is extremely valuable as an asset to the government as well as the UK population, especially when compared to health care provision in other countries.
Excellent Candidate Response
Welfare plays a pivotal role in the UK, with the welfare state covering health, education, employment and social security. The use of the term ‘welfare crown’ encompasses these services, and describing the NHS as the ‘jewel’ suggests that it is as being precious and valuable, but also resilient and durable. The NHS is extremely valuable to the UK, being able to provide healthcare that is ‘free’ to the point of delivery, and without it great numbers of people would be unable to access even the simplest forms of healthcare. It has also shown itself to be resilient, having lasted for greater than 70 years to date, despite the vast political and socioeconomic changes that have occurred in the UK.
