Motivation & Insight into Medicine 9
How would you address the impending crisis of an ageing population that is living longer?
Average Candidate Response
The main challenge will be increased strain on health provision; this could be counteracted by increasing taxation and welfare expenditure.
Excellent Candidate Response
To address this issue of an ageing population, the main disadvantages must be highlighted. Economic consequences include a reduction in the work force and thus less revenue in the form of taxation, as more elderly people retire and so stop paying taxes to the government. To rectify this, a possible solution could be to increase the number of older individuals remaining in the work force; for example, through reducing working hours. A social problem with an ageing population is the rise in loneliness amongst the elderly population, with many not having strong social support, due to no longer having an occupation and the associated social interaction. A potential solution to this could be the creation of volunteering schemes catered to older individuals, not only providing activities to encourage social participation, but also allowing these individuals to give back and help the community. In particular, elderly populations could work with young people, helping to bridge the existing generation gap and further integrate different age groups.
