Role Play Scenario 14
You and a fellow student Matthew have been working on a presentation together for a group of senior healthcare staff. Your fellow student has given you incorrect data, meaning that the slides you produced are incorrect. The presentation is due tomorrow.
In this role play, you decide to speak to Matthew about this.
Excellent Student Approach
2. Open Questions
3. Develop Rapport
4. Address the issues known
5. Identify any additional issues
6. Summary and plan going forward
1,2 - Check that Matthew is free to talk, and that the two of you are in a private place before beginning a discussion - they may find it uncomfortable if this issue is raised in front of staff. Ask your colleague a simple open question to begin, after greeting them and checking in with them, like ‘I think you may have provided me with the wrong data, is that possible?’
3 - Don’t worry too much about developing rapport here, but remember to be polite and considerate throughout. Your colleague will probably feel as bad about this situation as you!
4 - Inform your colleague that the incorrect data has meant that the slides you’ve worked on are also correct; be honest if this is making you feel anxious about tomorrow’s presentation. There will likely be a simple reason you got the wrong data; it’s worth knowing why in case this is something that can be worked on in the future.
5 - Check if your colleague can help you prepare for the presentation, or help you crunch the relevant data more quickly, if they have done their part already. After all, the two of you are a team for this task.
6 - To summarise, ensure that you understand why the mistake was made, that you have the new data, and that the two of you are still on good footing and able to work together to make the presentation as good as possible by tomorrow.
