Role Play Scenario 18
You’ve just entered an essay writing prize at your university, and are leaving the hand-in room. You overhear another student joke that they have also entered, and given how much they paid an essay-writing company to write theirs for them, they’re sure to win.
In this role play, you may speak to the student.
Excellent Student Approach
1. Introduction
2. Open Questions
3. Develop Rapport
4. Address the issues known
5. Identify any additional issues
6. Summary and plan going forward
1 - Walk across and introduce yourself to the student when a time to do so occurs.
2 - Explain that you couldn’t help but overhear what they were saying, as you have also entered the competition.
3 - Ensure that you are polite throughout, and don’t antagonise your fellow student.
4 - Explain that you have spent a long time preparing your entry, and other students have done the same. You therefore don’t believe it’s fair that someone pays to ensure that they have a good entry. Let the student explain their position; perhaps they were joking, but if so how can they prove this?
5 - By paying an essay writing company, they may find themselves in serious trouble with the university. As such, whether or not you choose to report their behaviour, it may well be in their own best interests to withdraw from the competition.
6 - If the student admits that the essay was written by someone else, ensure that they are willing to remove it from the competition. If not, explain that you will have to speak to the university about the situation. If they do not admit it was written by someone else, explain that you feel duty bound to report your suspicions to the university anyway, and will let them investigate.
