Role Play Scenario 30
Noel, who is of your male team mates on the football team and studying to be a health professional, has been overheard making disparaging remarks about female professors. He has started to make similar comments to, and about, female students.
In this role play, you may speak to Noel.
Excellent Student Approach
1. Introduction
2. Open Questions
3. Develop Rapport
4. Address the issues known
5. Identify any additional issues
6. Summary and plan going forward
1 - Ask Noel to speak to you in private after practice. Check how they are doing in general.
2 - Start with an open question. An example would be, ‘I’ve asked you to speak today to talk about some comments that you have recently made. Do you have any idea what I might be referring to?’ This provides the student with a chance to quickly reflect and address the issue on their own terms.
3 - Make an effort not to appear rude or condescending. They will likely not enjoy your choice to take a stance on this.
4 - Let their response to your first question guide you. They may immediately recognise the fault, and you can have a constructive conversation from there. If not, you will need to explicitly spell out the issue - ‘I find the way you speak about women offensive and inappropriate. It needs to stop.’ Be firm in your manner.
5 - They may be evasive, or become irritated. If so, remind them that aside from being immediately offensive, their behaviour is unbecoming of a future healthcare professional. Consider if their actions also reflect their general behaviour or if this is an isolated concern. If need be, you are unafraid to speak to university staff.
6 - To move forward, obtain an assurance that they will reflect on this behaviour and alter it. Warn them that if this doesn’t happen, you will have to take further actions.
