What is the most important skill for a doctor?

- Being able to work as a team member is very important as often different medical professionals need to work together.
- Having empathy is very important as to give good quality care; doctors need to understand the difficulties that the patient is going through.
- Leadership is important to make sure that clinical decisions are made quickly.

Some important skills for a doctor include empathy and leadership, but I feel that the most important skill is teamwork.
Teamwork is vital in order to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. This requires effective communication skills, as well as teamwork. I have developed my team working skills through my volunteering – I volunteer as a Girlguiding leader, which means that I have to be able to take different roles in the team, to ensure activities run smoothly for the girls.
In order to be a good team worker, flexibility is also very important. Being able to adjust your role in a team is vital for an effective MDT. During a patient’s treatment plan, different professionals take the lead. Flexibility is required to take different roles in a team, such as being a supporter or taking a more leadership role.
