MMI Station Specific Techniques
Role Play - The 6 Stages of MMI Role Play
Role Play tasks may involve medical or non-medical scenarios with trained actors. Many students are overly focused on addressing the issues mentioned in the scenario (step 4) and ignore the fact that additional issues may also be present. Without building appropriate rapport and asking about additional concerns, these will not be mentioned and often limit students' ability to score highly in this station.
The 6 Stages of MMI Role Play
1. Introduction
2. Open Questions (Questions that allow scope for varying responses rather than a yes/no answer)
3. Develop Rapport
4. Address the issues known
5. Identify any additional issues
6. Summary and plan going forward
Breaking Bad News
S – Setting up the interview (preparing yourself and the consultation setting)
P – Perception (Understanding the patient’s perception of their condition and it’s seriousness)
I – Invitation (Wait for the patient to invite you to deliver the bad news)
K – Knowledge (Knowledge and information transfer to the patient)
E – Empathy and emotional support
S – Summary and strategy for the future
