Motivation/Insight Question 16
Do you have prior experience of working in a healthcare environment, and if so what did you learn?
Excellent Candidate Response
Yes, I do have experience of working in a healthcare environment. Two years ago, I worked as a healthcare assistant in my local hospital for a period of six months, an opportunity that taught me a significant amount about patient care, and the key skills required when working in a hospital. As I was seeing many patients, many of whom were slightly intimidated by the hospital environment, I found that it was important to be as compassionate and open as possible. I was responsible for looking after patients’ general wellbeing, doing tasks such as helping them wash themselves, and cleaning and making beds. Many of these procedures required the patient to trust me, in particular those involving carrying out examinations, thus it was imperative that I had a good relationship with the patient, and that they were comfortable throughout. I also learnt about how essential it is to have good communication skills. This is not only important when interacting with patients, but also with other hospital staff; for example, I would often liaise with nurses and porters when discussing patients’ treatment and transportation between wards.
