Motivation/Insight Question 3
What do you consider are the main challenges faced by nurses in the NHS?
Excellent Candidate Response
I would consider the shortage in the number of nurses to be the greatest challenge facing those working in the NHS. Due to factors such as low levels of recruitment, and also many nurses choosing to not stay in the profession, there is an increased pressure on those who remain in the field. The UK is also facing a rise in the ageing population, as people live longer due to healthcare accessibility, resulting in many elderly people in particular requiring a greater amount of care as chronic illnesses become more prevalent, exacerbating the work burden of nurses. I would also regard the relatively low pay an obstacle faced by nurses. Considering the long hours nurses are required to work, alongside the stresses of caring for a significantly high number of patients as a result of staff shortages, I believe that their pay is not reflective of this. This is particularly relevant for nurses who may have children or other individuals that are financially reliant on them, and thus may already struggle to make ends meet.
