Motivation/Insight Question 8
How have you dealt with conflict in the past?
Excellent Candidate Response
When I was in year 11, I participated in the National Citizen’s Service, a three-week programme in which my peers and I carried out a campaign to help the local environment centre. Prior to launching this campaign, I was chosen to be the project manager of the group, meaning I had the responsibility of deciding which cause we would support, and how we would go about pitching our ideas to a panel of judges, to receive funding for the project. However, there would often be disagreements within the group, for example regarding which organisation we selected to help. This was also difficult as many members of the group were older than me, and therefore would not always listen to or respect my management. In situations such as these, I found that holding meetings was an effective way of resolving any conflicts. During these meetings, I would encourage members to voice their opinions and ideas to the rest of the group; we would then collectively vote for which proposal we supported, or compromise and incorporate different suggestions. This meant that we were able to create a project that we all supported and were passionate about, with all team members feeling as though they had been listened to and appreciated.
