Role Play Scenario 13
Everyone in your team has received a new work laptop apart from you. You’re aware that your manager seems to dislike you, but are not sure why.
In this role play, you are able to speak to your manager Toby.
Excellent Student Approach
1. Introduction
2. Open Questions
3. Develop Rapport
4. Address the issues known
5. Identify any additional issues
6. Summary and plan going forward
1,2 - Ask your manager for an appropriate time to speak to them in private. If they ask why, explain that it’s nothing immediately serious, but something that has been bothering you and merits discussion. When you speak, lead with an open question, or statement - like, ‘I was wondering if it would be possible to discuss a couple of things further with you?’
3 – This should be followed by ‘In particular, I had noticed that other team members had all been given a new laptop….’ Make sure you are respectful and appropriate, and listen carefully and attentively.
4,5 - Dependent on your manager’s initial response, you may wish to follow with another open statement or question, like ‘I’ve additionally noticed that your behaviour toward me is less friendly than it is towards others in the team.’ Make sure that your manager is aware of your feelings - is their behaviour impairing your work? Is it causing you to be upset in the workplace or even at home? It may be that the behaviour was unintentional, or there may be a clear reason. It’s crucial to find out why. It may be necessary to give other examples than the laptop.
6 - To summarise; make sure the manager is aware of your feelings, and how their behaviour is impacting you. Work together with your manager to understand the cause, and develop a plan to work together more productively (and fairly) in future.
