Role Play Scenario 18
You are working at a local shop while studying. You notice your co-worker, Tom, repeatedly stealing small items, and eating food from the shelves whenever he feels hungry. Once you overhear a customer ask Tom what he is doing, but he rudely tells them to be quiet.
In this role play, you may speak to Tom.
Excellent Student Approach
1. Introduction
2. Open Questions
3. Develop Rapport
4. Address the issues known
5. Identify any additional issues
6. Summary and plan going forward
1 - Speak to Tom, and ask him to speak in private with you at a convenient time.
2 - Lead with a polite open question, like, ‘I feel I have to raise something with you - I’ve noticed you taking items from the shelves a few times now….’
3 - Ensure that you are polite and that you act as a friendly, sympathetic colleague.
4 - Explain that what you have seen is bothering you, and you felt you had to act. Mention to Tom that you have chosen to speak to him first, rather than a manager. Let him explain his actions, and be patient whilst he does so. If he gets angry, remain calm and professional. Explain that his behaviour is unprofessional and illegal, and that it will damage the shop’s prospects.
5 - There isn’t an innocent explanation for Tom’s behaviour here - so even if he apologises and promise to stop, you may choose to tell him that you will be telling the manager anyway. Your response here will likely be guided by how Tom reacts to you speaking to him. Consider exploring the underlying reasons as to why Tom is stealing; is this to fuel a substance misuse habit, or is he merely the victim of challenging social circumstances.
6 - Tell Tom whether or not you will pursue this issue further. If you are not going to tell the manager, explain that you will have to if he continues this behaviour. Ensure that he seems aware that his behaviour is wrong, unprofessional, and must cease.
