Role Play Scenario 25
You observe two younger students arguing loudly outside the doors of your teaching hospital. They are wearing their university ID tags. They are shouting at each other, and passers by have started to stop and stare, looking concerned. You decide to see if you can help.
In this role play, you may speak to the two students.
Excellent Student Approach
1. Introduction
2. Open Questions
3. Develop Rapport
4. Address the issues known
5. Identify any additional issues
6. Summary and plan going forward
1 - Walk over and introduce yourself politely to the two students.
2 - Open with a question that addresses the issue, such as, ‘I couldn’t help but notice the two of you arguing. Is everything alright?’
3 - Try to appear empathetic and calming. Try not to appear like you are simply curious to see what is happening.
4 - Explain that their argument is drawing a lot of attention amongst members of the public. Ensure that they realise that their behaviour in and around the hospital reflects on the university, and teaching staff in the hospital. Patients will feel justifiably alarmed to see two trainee medics or healthcare professionals shouting at each other, just outside their workplace. Whilst they may have a significant problem, this is not the place to argue. They will likely take this cue to move inside; if not, urge them to move somewhere more private.
5 - Check if there’s anything you can do to help - but it is likely that your role here is simply to move them out of the public’s view.
6 - To summarise; the public’s wellbeing is a concern here, so attempt to move the argument inside. Your fellow students’ wellbeing is also of concern, so ensure you check up on them and show empathy to their situation.
