Motivation/Insight Question 9
What is your biggest achievement to date?
Excellent Candidate Response
I would describe my biggest achievement to date is a volunteering experience I had recently. For three weeks, my peers and I visited a small village in Zambia, teaching at a local school, and helping out at a healthcare centre and orphanage. This experience was unique for a number of reasons. For example, it opened my eyes to the issues that less developed areas face, as I experienced them face to face; in this particular village, teenage pregnancies were a significantly prominent issue, with girls as young as 14 having children, making it difficult or nearly impossible for them to pursue an education. For this reason, I was more motivated to ensure that I was teaching the children to the best of my ability, as I realised this may be the extent of education that many may receive.
I regard this opportunity as an achievement as I felt as though I was making a difference to these children’s lives. During certain nights, we would visit the children as they were doing their homework, and in this setting in particular I was able to individually teach my students, and directly see the effect that I was having, as they would engage and seem keen to learn. This experience also made me want to return to Zambia, or another disadvantaged region, and continue my volunteer work but perhaps in a medical setting.
