Role Play Scenario 17
One of your tutors consistently makes sexist remarks during teaching, implying that women are less able to be healthcare professionals. No one appears to have spoken to him about this, although multiple people are upset and annoyed. Your tutor appears to have noticed your annoyance, but hasn’t changed their behaviour.
In this role play, you may speak to your tutor.
Excellent Student Approach
2. Open Questions
3. Develop Rapport
4. Address the issues known
5. Identify any additional issues
6. Summary and plan going forward
1 - Ask your tutor to speak in private after your tutorial. If they are not available then, ask them when you can meet instead.
2 - Start with an open question, like, ‘Thanks for meeting with me; I was wondering if you knew why I wanted to meet with you?’
3 - Ensure that you are polite and respectful throughout; by being professional you are more likely to get a positive result from the discussion.
4 - Your tutor may immediately know why you have decided to see him. If so, you can begin the discussion straightaway. If not, explain that you have been offended by the way he speaks about women during class. Ensure that he understands how serious this is; you don’t see his comments as funny, and nor will other people. These comments can be damaging to women in the group. A constructive discussion is needed, where your tutor is respectful, understands your position, and agrees to consider their behaviour.
5 - If your tutor is disrespectful or justifying of his behaviour, explain that you are happy to take your complaint further to the university.
6 - Check that the tutor has understood why you and others are upset, and that they will change their behaviour in future tutorials. If they are not willing to do so, explain that you will have to speak to someone senior to him about how he is choosing to act.
