Role Play Scenario 22
You are deciding the roles for a student committee. One of your friends, Dowan, is hoping to become the treasurer. You don’t think he’s suitable for the role, as you believe he isn’t responsible enough, and have decided not to select him.
In this role play, may speak to your friend.
Excellent Student Approach
1. Introduction
2. Open Questions
3. Develop Rapport
4. Address the issues known
5. Identify any additional issues
6. Summary and plan going forward
1 - Greet Dowan and ask him how he is.
2 - Ask him an open question, or give a statement that signposts the conversation. ‘I was reviewing the committee positions, and I thought that it would be a good idea to discuss this further with you – have you had any thoughts about this?’
3 - Ensure you are empathetic - Dowan is your friend so you should treat him as such.
4 – Advised Dowan of your decision; frame your explanation of the decision dependent on how he reacts to your initial statement. It may be that he expected this news, or he might be surprised and upset. Tell him that although he’s a good friend, you felt it necessary to make this decision on behalf of the committee. If he asks why, be truthful and explain that you did not believe he was responsible enough to handle it.
5 - Explain that this doesn’t mean that he cannot take a position in the committee in the future; he just needs to show more maturity and involvement throughout the next year.
6 - Check that Dowan understands why you have made this decision, and that your friendship will not be damaged by this decision. If he is still upset, offer to help him make the committee next time round.
