Role Play Scenario 24
Due to a timing mistake, your cohort leaves an exam before the next cohort enters for their sitting. You catch one of your fellow students, Scott, texting his friend in the next cohort. He is sending a list of questions and possible answers. There is still time for the next cohort to revise these questions in the waiting area.
In this role play, you may speak to Scott.
Excellent Student Approach
1. Introduction
2. Open Questions
3. Develop Rapport
4. Address the issues known
5. Identify any additional issues
6. Summary and plan going forward
1 - Quickly introduce yourself to Scott.
2 - Explain that you couldn’t help but notice what he was doing. Ask him if he has thought through his actions.
3 - Do your utmost to remain calm and polite.
4 - Explain that by texting his friend, he is allowing his friend a significant advantage over all the other students that have already sat the exam. Indeed, if his friend chooses to divulge the answers to others in his cohort, then many students in the second cohort could receive an advantage, affecting the marking averages. In a professional exam, this is unacceptable and unfair. It is entirely possible that someone who doesn’t have the knowledge to pass may do so simply because of this information - which theoretically could endanger patient safety.
5 - Explain that you feel you have no choice but to report this to an invigilator as soon as possible. The only chance of averting this is if the messages are unread; there is a chance the second cohort enters the exam before these communications are opened. However, even if the messages have not been read, the correct choice is to report the issue anyway.
6 - Ensure you quickly catch an invigilator’s attention and explain the situation. They will be able to decide what next steps to take.
