Role Play Scenario 30
You’ve been leading a group of students working on a project, aiming to be published alongside a small team of healthcare professionals. One of your colleagues, Roisin, comes to you in private and asks you to meet with them later, saying that they are exhausted by the demands of the project, especially when combined their course.
In this role play, you may speak to Roisin.
Excellent Student Approach
1. Introduction
2. Open Questions
3. Develop Rapport
4. Address the issues known
5. Identify any additional issues
6. Summary and plan going forward
1 - Meet with Roisin later in the day and ask them how they are.
2 - Explain that you heard what they said earlier, and that you understand how they must be feeling. A good open question to continue the discussion might be, ‘how can I help you, and what can we do about this together?’
3 - Ensure that you are empathetic, and that you listen thoroughly throughout.
4 - Review together what aspects of the work they are struggling with, and the responsibilities they have in the project team. Think about which of these could be offloaded to another team member, or shared. Ask them if there is anyone they can think of in the team, or outside it, that could help them work more efficiently. Ask them if they still want to be part of this, and reassure them that even if they are to work less, or even drop out entirely, their work so far will still be valued.
5 - They may be concerned with being credited for their work, at the expense of their core university work, hence the need to reassure them on this.
6 - To move forward, develop a plan to lessen their workload to an amount that they are able to manage. Work together to find people, or methods, that help them work more efficiently.
